A new study has found a possible link between menopause and declining gut barrier integrity, suggesting hormonal changes during the transition may contribute to intestinal damage and systemic inflammation.
Researchers studied 964 women across 3,586 time points, tracking them before, during and after their final menstrual period. They examined blood markers linked to gut lining damage and immune activation caused by microbial leakage into the bloodstream.
The study identified a prolonged period of gut vulnerability around menopause.
Gut barrier damage appeared to begin around 2.5 years before the final menstrual period, with markers of intestinal cell damage increasing during this period.
Immune response markers began rising about six months after menopause and peaked roughly six to six-and-a-half years later.
Overall, gut damage markers increased by about 26 per cent, while immune activation rose by 7.5 per cent.
The findings suggest gut vulnerability may continue for nearly a decade, potentially adding to health concerns beyond common menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and mood changes.
The findings could be particularly relevant for India, where menopause typically occurs around the age of 46–47.
The research highlights the importance of greater awareness and comprehensive menopause care.
Ovarian hormones such as oestradiol and progesterone play an important role in maintaining gut barrier function. Their decline during menopause may increase gut vulnerability and contribute to low-grade inflammation.
The study offers insights into ovarian ageing rather than chronological ageing alone.
Declining oestrogen and increased inflammation may potentially be linked to long-term risks such as bone loss and cardiovascular disease.
The research may help explain digestive symptoms, including bloating and discomfort, that some women experience during menopause.
Nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices and medically appropriate treatments may form part of broader preventive care.
Experts stress that menopause care should focus on overall wellbeing, including gut, bone, cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health, rather than addressing only immediate symptoms.
