HBCH&RC Punjab Launches MPE 2026 Workshop To Advance Precision Cancer Diagnosis

Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), Punjab, has launched a four-day workshop to strengthen molecular diagnostics and promote precision-based cancer treatment.

The first edition of Molecular Pathology Essentials (MPE 2026) is being organised by the Department of Oncopathology and Molecular Pathology from October 28 to 31.

Chandigarh Director of Health Services Dr Suman Singh inaugurated the programme as the chief guest, with HBCH&RC Director Dr Ashish Gulia also present.

Medical professionals from Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other states are participating.

Dr Ashish Gulia said molecular pathology helps doctors identify genetic alterations responsible for cancer and select appropriate treatments for patients. He added that the workshop would strengthen practical expertise, improve laboratory capabilities across North India and expand access to advanced diagnostic services.

The programme features laboratory sessions, expert lectures and interactive clinical discussions.

Participants will receive hands-on training in nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), digital droplet PCR (ddPCR), Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Sessions will, however, cover quality control, diagnostic principles and the interpretation of molecular test results to support accurate treatment decisions.

Dr Suman Singh commended the hospital for combining quality medical care with financial and social support for patients. She further stressed the need to strengthen super-speciality courses and highlighted the Chandigarh Health Department’s collaboration with the hospital to screen people in remote areas for early cancer detection.

The hospital’s Department of Oncopathology conducts more than 315,000 tests annually across histopathology, cytopathology, haematology, biochemistry, molecular pathology and cytogenetics.

Through MPE 2026, HBCH&RC aims to strengthen diagnostic expertise and laboratory capabilities, supporting its broader commitment to making affordable, advanced cancer care accessible closer to patients’ homes.
