Global Breast Cancer Cases Could Reach 3.5 Million By 2050, Warns Lancet Oncology Study

A new analysis published on 2 March in The Lancet Oncology has projected a significant rise in global breast cancer cases over the coming decades.

Annual cases could rise from 2.3 million in 2023 to over 3.5 million by 2050.

Yearly deaths may increase by 44 per cent, from 764,000 to nearly 1.4 million.

Kayleigh Bhangdia of the University of Washington led the study. The report says the global burden remains deeply unequal.

High-income nations provide screening and timely treatment, but low- and lower-middle-income countries lack adequate care.

Though they account for 27 per cent of cases, they bear over 45 per cent of deaths.

Researchers link this gap to shortages of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, diagnostics and costly treatment.

The authors warn that women’s health gains could stall without targeted action in low-resource settings.

The study analysed registry data and family interviews across 204 countries, covering 1990 to 2023, with projections to 2050.

Cases rose from 9,24,000 in 1990 to 2.3 million in 2023 and may reach 3.56 million by 2050. Deaths could climb from 363,000 to 1.37 million.

Researchers linked over a quarter of cases to modifiable risks, led by high red meat intake, tobacco use, high blood sugar and obesity. Alcohol use and physical inactivity also contributed.

The report urges stronger prevention, better cancer care infrastructure and universal health coverage.

Dr Olayinka Ilesanmi said low- and middle-income nations face rising pressure from lifestyle shifts and weak health systems.

While survival rates continue to improve in high-income countries, the authors caution that outcomes still vary based on access to care.

Without decisive global action, breast cancer could impose an even heavier toll on women and communities worldwide.
