Dengue Symptoms: 7 Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted mainly by infected Aedes mosquitoes. The disease can range from a mild illness to a serious condition requiring urgent medical care.

Early recognition of symptoms can help patients receive timely treatment and monitoring.

The infection commonly causes a sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and extreme tiredness.

Some people may develop nausea, vomiting, skin rashes or mild bleeding from the nose or gums.

Symptoms usually appear several days after an infected mosquito bite.

While many patients recover with proper care, dengue can become severe in some cases.

Warning signs include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, bleeding, extreme weakness, restlessness or blood in vomit or stools.

A sudden drop in temperature does not always mean recovery, particularly if other warning signs develop.

People experiencing persistent high fever or symptoms associated with dengue should seek medical advice.

Doctors may recommend blood tests to confirm the infection and monitor the patient’s condition.

Patients should avoid self-medication, particularly medicines that can increase the risk of bleeding.

Adequate rest and fluids are important during recovery. Drinking water and other suitable fluids can help prevent dehydration, while medical monitoring may be necessary in patients with severe symptoms or other health risks.

Preventing mosquito bites remains one of the most effective ways to reduce dengue transmission.

People can use mosquito repellents, wear clothing that covers the skin and keep doors and windows protected with screens where possible.

Removing stagnant water from containers, coolers, pots and other areas can help limit mosquito breeding.

Recognising dengue symptoms early and responding promptly to warning signs can reduce the risk of serious complications.

Anyone with concerning symptoms should consult a healthcare professional rather than relying on self-treatment.
