Could Swollen Lymph Nodes Be A Sign Of A Rare Blood Cancer?

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare yet exceptionally aggressive cancer that originates in T cells, a specialised type of white blood cell responsible for defending the body against harmful pathogens. Its symptoms closely resemble common infections and autoimmune disorders; clinicians may initially misdiagnose the disease, delaying appropriate treatment.

Early recognition is vital, as prompt diagnosis can prevent life-threatening immune system failure and significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Accurate identification also helps physicians avoid prescribing ineffective medications intended for unrelated illnesses.

AITL can severely disrupt the immune system, causing it to attack the body’s own tissues.

The disease may trigger complications such as anaemia, abnormal immune activity and excessive antibody production.

Greater clinical awareness enables healthcare professionals to recognise AITL as a malignancy from the outset, rather than pursuing multiple incorrect diagnoses.

Patients commonly develop painless, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin. Other hallmark symptoms include persistent fever, drenching night sweats and unexplained weight loss exceeding 10 per cent of body weight.

Nearly half of all patients experience itchy, flat or raised skin rashes, while many also suffer from prolonged fatigue, joint swelling and diminished appetite.

Originally identified as angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinaemia (AILD), researchers initially believed the condition represented an overactive immune disorder.

Subsequent medical advances established AITL as a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is now classified as a mature T-cell lymphoma, enabling more precise diagnosis, improved prognosis and increasingly effective therapeutic strategies.
