Avian influenza has been confirmed in Bihar’s Darbhanga district following the death of thousands of crows, prompting authorities to place the area on high alert and intensify surveillance measures.
The confirmation has sparked concern among residents and led to swift administrative action.
Large-scale crow deaths were first reported on January 12 in the Bhigo area of Ward No. 31 within Darbhanga’s urban limits.
Since then, similar incidents have surfaced across other parts of the district. Local councillors estimate that nearly 10,000 crows may have died so far.
The Animal Husbandry Department sent samples from the dead birds to a laboratory in Bhopal for testing, with results received on Friday confirming avian influenza infection.
Following the confirmation, officials from the district administration, municipal corporation, and animal husbandry department rushed to the affected areas.
Teams collected dead birds using personal protective equipment and disposed of them scientifically by burying them in deep pits, adhering to prescribed safety protocols.
Dr Mohammad Intikhab Akhtar said the Animal Husbandry Department has deployed veterinary teams across Darbhanga to inspect poultry farms.
Authorities have ordered serological surveillance to detect possible infection by testing antibodies in chickens. Officials said they will take immediate action if they detect any symptoms.
The district administration has urged residents to avoid contact with dead birds and to promptly report any unusual bird deaths.
Officials said strict monitoring will continue to prevent the spread of the disease and to safeguard public and animal health as containment efforts remain in place.
