Are Young Indians Becoming Prediabetic? Report Flags Rising Health Risks

A recent report has raised serious concerns about the health of young Indians, indicating that nearly 20 per cent of individuals in their twenties fall into the prediabetic category. This condition, marked by elevated blood sugar levels not yet reaching diabetic thresholds, reflects a worrying rise in lifestyle-related disorders.

The study, conducted by Apollo Hospitals, further reveals that close to 70 per cent of young adults suffer from vitamin D deficiency, an essential nutrient for bone strength and immune function.

The findings are based on an analysis of more than three million preventive health check-ups carried out across its network in 2025, highlighting a growing burden of undiagnosed conditions.

The report also notes that nearly two-thirds of individuals under 30 exhibit poor flexibility, strength, or balance, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues, injuries, and reduced longevity.

Health risks are evident across students and professionals alike, with nearly two in three college students aged 17 to 25 showing at least one significant health concern.

Among working individuals, particularly those in their late thirties, around half are either prediabetic or diabetic, while nearly 80 per cent are overweight, underlining the impact of sedentary lifestyles.

Prathap C Reddy stressed the need for personalised prevention strategies, noting that risks vary widely.

The report also flagged concerns in women’s health, with Preetha Reddy urging greater focus on breast cancer screening and awareness. The findings emphasise that continuous care, regular follow-ups, and lifestyle changes are key to improving long-term health outcomes.
