PIB Fact Check Warns Against Fake SBI Rewards APK Scam

The Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit has issued a public warning against a fraudulent message claiming to offer State Bank of India (SBI) reward benefits through an APK download link.

The alert appeared on X (formerly Twitter) after several users reported receiving suspicious SMS or WhatsApp messages asking them to install an application to redeem rewards.

According to PIB Fact Check, the message is fake and part of a scam designed to deceive users into downloading malicious files.

The government body categorically stated that SBI does not send links or APK files via SMS or WhatsApp for reward redemption or any other service.

The fraudulent communication typically asks recipients whether they have received a message to ‘download and install an APK file’ to redeem SBI rewards.

Such messages often create urgency or promise benefits, prompting users to act quickly without verifying the source.

PIB Fact Check has marked these claims as false, stressing that they do not originate from SBI.

Cybercriminals commonly use unofficial apps and external links to gain unauthorised access to personal and financial information.

Along with debunking the claim, PIB Fact Check has advised users to remain cautious.

Citizens have, however, been urged to never download unknown files or click on suspicious links received through messaging platforms.

Installing APK files from unverified sources can compromise device security and lead to financial fraud.

The warning reiterates a consistent message from banks and authorities: official banking communication does not involve unsolicited app downloads or links sent via personal messaging apps.

Officials advise users to ignore such messages and rely only on official SBI channels for information on banking services and rewards.
