PIB Fact Check Warns Against AI Deepfake Video Misusing Nirmala Sitharaman’s Identity

PIB Fact Check has dismissed a fabricated AI-generated video circulating on WhatsApp that falsely portrays Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing an investment platform.

The misleading video claims that an investment of ₹21,000 could generate returns of nearly ₹30 lakh.

Authorities clarified that neither the Finance Minister nor any official government initiative has approved, promoted, or authorised such investment schemes.

Officials warned that fraudsters increasingly use deepfake technology and artificial intelligence tools to create deceptive content and falsely establish credibility.

The government stated that cybercriminals continue targeting citizens through manipulated visuals, fabricated endorsements, and misleading financial promises.

These scams attempt to exploit public trust in senior political leaders and government institutions.

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check warned users against the fake investment video and clarified that neither Nirmala Sitharaman nor the Government of India had endorsed any such platform.

PIB Fact Check emphasised that this incident forms part of a recurring pattern of online financial fraud.

Similar scams have previously circulated through social media platforms and messaging applications using edited videos and synthetic audio.

Officials urged citizens to verify every investment-related claim through official government portals and trusted institutional channels before making financial decisions. They also advised users to remain cautious of unrealistic return promises and unverified digital advertisements.

The fact-checking unit encouraged the public to report suspicious videos, fake promotional material, and fraudulent schemes directly to its official verification platform.

Authorities stressed that early reporting can help prevent wider circulation and reduce financial losses among unsuspecting investors.

Cybersecurity experts continue highlighting the growing misuse of artificial intelligence in digital fraud operations. They warned that deepfake technology now enables highly convincing impersonations, making public awareness and independent verification increasingly essential in protecting consumers from financial deception and online manipulation.
