The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has warned the public about a fake WhatsApp message claiming that the central government is giving free laptops to students.
Officials clarified that the message and its attached URL are fraudulent, urging people not to click suspicious links.
The false message, circulating widely on WhatsApp and social media, claims that students can apply for free laptops through a government website. However, PIB’s fact-checking team confirmed that no such scheme or website exists under the Government of India.
In a post on X, PIB Fact Check stated, “A message is being circulated on WhatsApp with a link claiming that the central government is providing free laptops to students. #PIBFactCheck This message is #fake and the URL is fraudulent. Do NOT click on suspicious links. Always VERIFY information through official sources!”
Authorities urged citizens to stay alert and verify all government-related claims through official websites and verified social media handles before sharing or responding.
Meanwhile, cyber experts have also warned that such phishing links often target users’ personal information, including bank details and identity numbers. They advised people to avoid providing private data or forwarding unverified messages.
The government continues to tackle misinformation through its PIB Fact Check initiative, which regularly exposes fake claims and online scams.
Officials emphasised that neither the Ministry of Education nor any other central body has launched a free laptop programme.
For accurate updates, citizens should visit pib.gov.in or follow verified government accounts on social media.
