PIB Fact Check Debunks Fake Claim On RBI, SEBI Regulating Cryptocurrency

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has debunked a viral social media post falsely claiming that the Ministry of Finance instructed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to regulate cryptocurrencies.

The agency confirmed that the claim is entirely fabricated. It also clarified that the government has not issued any such directive.

PIB Fact Check stated that the circulating post deliberately spreads misinformation by presenting a false narrative as official policy.

The agency urged the public to verify such claims through authorised government channels before sharing them on social media.

India’s official position on cryptocurrency remains unchanged. The government has not recognised cryptocurrencies as an asset class.

Regulatory discussions continue with a cautious approach.

The RBI has consistently favoured stricter measures, including prohibition. It has not supported introducing a formal regulatory framework.

The misleading post carried a fabricated ‘BREAKING’ headline alongside photographs of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the logos of the RBI and SEBI. It also used official-looking elements to make the claim appear authentic.

PIB Fact Check highlighted the graphic with a prominent ‘FAKE’ stamp to alert users that the content has been manipulated.

The fact-checking unit advised citizens to remain vigilant against misleading digital content and rely only on verified government sources for policy-related announcements. It reiterated that fabricated posts and doctored graphics can easily mislead the public and fuel unnecessary confusion.

PIB Fact Check continues to monitor and expose false claims involving government decisions, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring the dissemination of accurate and trustworthy information.
