The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed a letter circulating online claiming that India had temporarily suspended trade operations with Afghanistan due to escalating unrest in Iran.
The purported communication, widely shared on social media and attributed to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has been confirmed as false.
PIB labelled the letter as ‘#FAKE’ and warned the public against sharing it.
The bureau emphasised that the government issues all official updates on trade, export regulations, and bilateral commerce through authorised channels only. It advised users to verify claims before reposting.
Officials traced the misleading letter, which cited regional security developments and called for an immediate halt to all trade with Afghanistan, to accounts spreading Pakistani propaganda.
The text instructed exporters and importers to hold shipments and avoid new contracts, but PIB confirmed that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued no such directive.
PIB urged citizens, exporters, and businesses to consult official government portals for accurate guidance.
The bureau warned that sharing unverified content spreads misinformation and triggers unnecessary panic, especially in sensitive areas of trade and regional security.
This case highlights the growing trend of fabricating documents online to create confusion about India’s foreign and trade policies.
PIB conducted a timely fact-check to curb disinformation and maintain public awareness of authentic government communication.
The Press Information Bureau reaffirmed that India has not suspended trade with Afghanistan and confirmed that the circulated letter is entirely false. It encouraged citizens and businesses to follow verified channels for all official announcements on trade and regional developments.
