In a decisive intervention against digital misinformation, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has dismantled a viral Hindi newspaper clipping that falsely claims the Union government will impose sweeping communication restrictions from December 1, 2025.

The fabricated report alleged the rollout of ’13 new rules’, including mandatory country codes for all phone calls, severe limits on daily communication, and a rigid ‘one social media account per person’ policy.

PIB categorically rejected these claims, calling the clipping fake, misleading, and deliberately designed to create public panic.

Officials confirmed that no such notification, advisory, or policy proposal exists on any official government platform.

The viral image, widely shared across WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, carried forged stamps and formatting meant to imitate an official government announcement.

The misinformation attempted to blur the line between legitimate cybersecurity reforms and imaginary authoritarian controls.

PIB Fact Check clarified that the central government has not announced any blanket restrictions on phone calls, daily usage caps, or personal social media accounts.

In sharp contrast to the viral falsehood, PIB explained the actual regulatory framework coming into force on December 1, 2025, the Telecommunication Cyber Security (Amendment) Rules, 2025.

Under the genuine amendments, messaging platforms will implement SIM-based authentication, ensuring that accounts link to verified mobile numbers to curb impersonation and financial scams.

The rules mandate automatic logout from messaging apps after six hours of inactivity. This measure protects users from unauthorised access if devices are lost or compromised.

What the Rules Do Not Do

Crucially, the amendments do not restrict the number of calls, impose daily usage limits, mandate country codes for all communications, or cap social media accounts per individual, claims that formed the backbone of the viral clipping.
