MEA Debunks Viral Claim On India Recognising Somaliland

A viral post circulating on social media has been flagged as false after claiming that Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and India were set to officially recognise Somaliland.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs addressed the claim through its Fact Check unit. It clarified that no such decision has been taken or announced by the Indian government and dismissed the claim outright.

The post urged users to ‘stay tuned for updates’ and follow certain accounts for further developments.

Officials said the claim has no factual basis. They added that it does not reflect any official announcement or diplomatic decision by the countries named.

Government sources and independent fact-checkers have confirmed that no country has announced the recognition of Somaliland.

The MEA’s Fact Check team also verified the claim and described it as misleading.

Officials said the false claim appeared designed to spread confusion, particularly on sensitive issues related to international relations and diplomacy.

They urged social media users to verify information through credible news organisations and official government channels before sharing such content.

As of now, there has been no confirmation from India or any of the other countries mentioned regarding the recognition of Somaliland.

Authorities stressed that diplomatic decisions of this nature are communicated formally through official statements. They added that such decisions are never conveyed through anonymous or speculative social media posts.

Citizens have been advised to exercise caution, think critically, and avoid amplifying unverified claims.

Relying on trusted sources and official fact-checking mechanisms, officials said, remains the most effective way to counter the spread of misinformation online.
