Fake SMS Alert: PIB Fact Check Warns Against Fraudulent Message Claiming To Be From India Post

The government’s fact-checking unit, PIB Fact Check, has issued an important advisory warning citizens about a false message circulating via SMS that falsely claims to be from India Post.

Scammers send a deceptive message claiming that a package has arrived at a warehouse. They then urge recipients to update their address within 24 hours to prevent its return.

In a recent post on its official social media channels, PIB Fact Check categorically labelled the viral message as ‘fake’.

The fact-checking body confirmed that India Post does not send such notifications. It also clarified that the postal service never asks users to click links or update personal details for parcel delivery.

The post also carried a clear warning for the public: “Never click on such fraudulent links.”

This alert aims to protect individuals from potential phishing attacks that seek to collect sensitive personal data under the guise of postal communication.

India Post Distances Itself from Scam Messages

India Post operates under the Ministry of Communications. It has repeatedly urged customers to rely only on official communication channels for postal updates.

The India Post makes legitimate tracking or address confirmation requests only through its verified website or mobile application, not through unsolicited SMS or links.

Fraudsters often design such messages to steal user data or install malicious software on personal devices, which can cause identity theft or financial fraud.

Authorities are advising citizens to delete any suspicious SMS and avoid clicking on unfamiliar links. People who believe they have interacted with a fake message should report it directly on the cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in).

PIB Fact Check continues to play a vital role in combating misinformation by swiftly identifying and debunking false claims circulated online. This helps ensure that citizens remain informed and protected from digital deception.
