Fact Check: Did Iran Divert Oil Shipment From India To China Over Payment Issues? Govt Responds

The Government of India has firmly refuted reports alleging diversion of an Iranian crude shipment to China due to payment complications. Officials described the claims as ‘factually incorrect’ and misleading.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a clarification to counter speculation circulating in the media and online platforms.

Authorities stated that India procures crude oil from over 40 nations. Domestic refiners retain full commercial autonomy in selecting suppliers based on pricing and logistical efficiency.

The Ministry stressed that no payment-related obstacle affected any Iranian cargo.

Reports had indicated that a tanker, Ping Shun, carrying Iranian crude, altered its course from Vadinar in Gujarat to Dongying in China. This shift triggered conjecture regarding financial disputes. Market observers suggested stricter payment conditions might have influenced the rerouting.

The government dismissed such interpretations. It explained that shipping documents, including Bills of Lading, often specify tentative destinations.

Cargo routes may change mid-voyage due to trade optimisation and operational adjustments. Such practices remain standard within global oil markets.

Officials further assured that Indian refiners have already secured adequate crude supplies for the coming months. This includes diversified sourcing strategies to mitigate disruptions in the Middle East region.

Addressing parallel concerns, the government clarified that LPG supply remains unaffected.

A vessel named Sea Bird delivered approximately 44,000 metric tonnes of Iranian LPG to Mangalore on April 2. The unloading process is currently underway without disruption.

The clarification reinforces India’s stable energy procurement framework and dispels unfounded narratives surrounding supply constraints.
