Ted Sarandos Meets PM Modi As Netflix Launches India Storytelling Initiative

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to discuss the immense potential of India’s media and entertainment sector and the country’s growing role in global content creation.

Following the meeting, Netflix India announced the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, describing it as a long-term investment in nurturing the next generation of Indian creative talent.

In a post on X, the streaming platform said the initiative marks its 10 years in India and reflects its shared vision with the Prime Minister to take India’s media and entertainment industry to the global stage.

The company said it will develop the initiative through education and skilling partnerships with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

Sharing details of the meeting on X, PM Modi wrote, “Glad to have met Mr. Ted Sarandos. Discussed the immense potential of India’s media and entertainment sector.”

“India has a rich tradition of storytelling and an extraordinary pool of creative talent, which can be leveraged to strengthen our nation’s position as a global hub for content creation,” the post further read.

Focus on Creator Development

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said India has always been one of the world’s greatest storytelling nations and that Indian stories have increasingly connected with audiences worldwide. He added that investing in creators would remain Netflix’s biggest priority as it enters its next decade in India.

Under the initiative’s first phase, Netflix will partner with IICT to co-develop courses in Visual Effects Mastery and Media Technology Workflows. It will also offer scholarships for programmes in interactive comics, sequential art, virtual art department content creation, character animation, and e-sports and gaming management.

In the second phase, Netflix will work with the NFDC to train audio description writers and voice professionals, helping make films and series more accessible to people with visual and hearing impairments while supporting the government’s accessibility efforts.
