Rani Mukerji Says Hindi Cinema Has Always Portrayed Strong Women

Actress Rani Mukerji has emphasised that Hindi cinema has never shied away from portraying women as strong and resilient characters.

Addressing the notion that such roles are a modern trend, she said powerful female representations have existed in Indian films for decades.

During an exclusive interaction, Rani reflected on the contribution of legendary actresses who laid the groundwork for women-driven narratives.

“I believe our industry has always had very strong characters. Nutan ji did films like Bandini, Nargis ji did Mother India. So strong female characters have always been portrayed in our industry,” she said.

The conversation took place during an engaging session with women officers of the Delhi Police, where the actor discussed cinema’s role in shaping social perspectives.

Marking three decades in the film industry, Rani said she is now more mindful about the kind of stories she chooses to tell. She added that she aims to build on the legacy left by senior actors.

“In my own way, in this phase of my career, I am trying to carry forward the work that our seniors left behind, so that in every decade, the women who do films and the stories we bring to the screen continue to remain strong,” she noted.

Rani’s latest film, Mardaani 3, reinforces her commitment to impactful, issue-driven cinema.

Directed by Abhiraj Minawala and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film explores another harsh and unsettling reality of society, strengthening the franchise’s reputation for bold storytelling.

Evolution of the Mardaani Franchise

The first Mardaani, released in 2014, shed light on the grim world of human trafficking, while Mardaani 2 (2019) examined the disturbing mindset of a serial rapist who defied the system. The third instalment builds further on these themes.

Written by Aayush Gupta of The Railway Men fame, Mardaani 3 features actress Janaki Bodiwala, known for Shaitaan, in a key role.

The franchise has previously featured actors such as Jisshu Sengupta, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Anant Vidhaat Sharma, and Vishal Jethwa in supporting roles.

With her latest release, Rani Mukerji continues to underline the enduring presence of strong women in Hindi cinema.
