Rajkumar Hirani Reveals Ranbir Kapoor’s 3 AM Call Time, 5-Hour Sanju Makeover

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has revealed that Ranbir Kapoor routinely reached the Sanju set at 3 AM during the film’s production to prepare for the day’s shoot. He explained that the actor needed to spend several hours in the makeup chair before cameras rolled because of the extensive transformation required for his portrayal of Sanjay Dutt.

According to Hirani, Ranbir’s makeup process typically lasted between four and five hours, making the early arrival essential for a 7 AM shooting schedule.

The director recalled arriving at Film City around 6 AM and seeing Ranbir already immersed in the makeup process inside his vanity van before beginning a full day’s filming.

Responding to discussions about fixed working hours in the film industry, Rajkumar Hirani said the actors he has collaborated with understand the practical demands of filmmaking. He noted that they remain willing to work beyond scheduled hours whenever production requires it and focus on completing the day’s work efficiently.

Rajkumar Hirani said Ranbir handled the demanding schedule with remarkable discipline and never voiced any complaints despite the exhausting routine. He added that, throughout his career, he has seldom encountered actors who objected to extended shooting hours when the circumstances genuinely called for them.

Released in 2018, Sanju starred Ranbir Kapoor as Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and followed the highs and lows of his personal and professional life.

The biographical drama examined Dutt’s struggle with substance abuse as well as the legal controversies surrounding the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts, emerging as one of the year’s highest-grossing Hindi films.
