Nana Patekar Dies At 75 Leaving Behind An Unforgettable Cinema Legacy

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s respected performers, died at 75 in Goa on Thursday. He suffered cardiac arrest at his Dona Paula residence and was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where doctors could not revive him.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Patekar built a career spanning over four decades.

Known for his intense performances, distinctive dialogue delivery and complex characters, Nana Patekar became a leading name in Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Patekar made his Hindi debut with Gaman in 1978 and gained wider recognition with Salaam Bombay! and Parinda. He later delivered acclaimed performances in Angaar, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Yeshwant, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan and Raajneeti.

Nana Patekar worked extensively in Marathi cinema and theatre and made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991.

Patekar won a new generation of fans as Uday Shetty in the Welcome franchise. His other notable films, however, included Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Wajood, Hu Tu Tu, Gang, Deewangee, Bhoot, Welcome Back, Natsamrat and The Vaccine War.

The government awarded him the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. He won three National Film Awards and several other honours.

Beyond cinema, Nana Patekar supported social causes, including farmers and families affected by agrarian distress. He largely kept his personal life private despite his stature in the industry.

Patekar leaves behind a distinctive body of work spanning generations, languages and multiple genres.
