Actress Kriti Sanon has responded to criticism over her attire in a recent Raksha Bandhan advertisement.
The actor addressed the controversy through a note shared on Instagram on Tuesday.
Kriti appeared in an off-white ensemble featuring a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt for jewellery brand GIVA’s festive campaign.
The advertisement sparked an online debate, with several users questioning whether the outfit suited a traditional Indian festival.
Responding to the criticism, Kriti said the essence of festivals lies in emotions, and the meaning people attach to traditions. She described Raksha Bandhan as a bond of protection and said she and her sister tie rakhis to each other.
The actress said the sisters believe they can protect each other just as a brother would. They pray for each other’s health, happiness and long life. She added that they extend the same wishes to their dogs because they consider them family.
Kriti further questioned the practice of judging a woman’s respect for her culture through her clothing. She argued that ethnic fashion has evolved over time and said cultural values belong in the heart rather than being measured by a neckline.
Actress and politician Kangana Ranaut criticised Kriti on Monday.
Kangana said women today have access to diverse fashion choices, ranging from Western outfits to traditional Indian attire. She argued that women should maintain certain boundaries during traditional occasions.
Kangana questioned why someone would choose to tie a Rakhi to their brother while wearing a bikini or undergarments when numerous clothing options remain available.
The exchange has reignited a wider discussion about women’s clothing, cultural traditions and personal choice during Indian festivals.
