The Sensex and Nifty recovered from early declines to finish Tuesday’s session in positive territory. Gains in healthcare, pharmaceutical and public sector banking stocks supported the rebound.
The Sensex climbed 286.98 points, or 0.37 per cent, to settle at 77,656.09. The Nifty advanced 115.50 points, or 0.48 per cent, to close at 24,334.55.
Among Nifty constituents, Adani Enterprises, Max Healthcare Institute and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise recorded the strongest gains. Their performance helped improve broader market sentiment.
The wider market delivered mixed results. The Nifty MidCap index rose 0.54 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index slipped 0.1 per cent.
Healthcare, pharmaceutical and PSU banking stocks outperformed the broader market. Private sector banks and metal stocks remained under pressure.
Market analysts said the much-awaited United States sanctions against Iran fell below expectations.
The development eased concerns over energy supplies and pushed crude oil prices and bond yields down from recent highs.
Lower energy costs supported a moderately positive market close on the monthly expiry day.
Investors remain watchful ahead of upcoming inflation data and comments from the United States Federal Reserve Chair later this week.
Analysts expect near-term caution in Indian equities. Unresolved United States-Iran tensions could keep oil prices and bond yields elevated.
Investors may therefore remain sensitive to sudden developments in the Middle East.
The Indian rupee led gains among Asian currencies. Heavy central bank intervention and falling crude prices provided fresh support to the domestic currency.
From a technical perspective, analysts identified immediate support for spot USDINR near 95.25. Resistance remains around 95.75.
