India’s Renowned Cinematographer Santosh Sivan Wins Prestigious ‘Pierre Aunzeneau Excellence In Cinematography’ Award 2024

This year, four Indian filmmakers were recognized at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, India’s renowned cinematographer Santosh Sivan received the prestigious ‘Pierre Aunzeneau Excellence in Cinematography’ award for 2024 at the Bunuel Theater of the main palace. Sivan was honored with an official and ceremonial red carpet welcome. Estonia’s young cinematographer Kadri Koop was also awarded the Special Encouragement Award. Aunzeneau, a company known for producing cameras and modern camera lenses for filmmaking, is the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival. Since 2013, the company has collaborated with the festival to present the Lifetime Achievement and Encouragement Awards in cinematography.

Santosh Sivan’s Grand Recognition

Santosh Sivan, celebrated worldwide for his work, was the recipient of this prestigious honor. A master class and a grand ceremonial dinner were organized at the Majestic Hotel in his honor. The Aunzieu company, which invented the SLR camera and zoom lens, has a rich history, including providing the camera that captured the first close-up images of the moon’s surface during NASA’s Ranger 7 moon mission in 1964.

Thierry Fremon, the director of the Cannes Film Festival, highlighted India’s significant contribution to cinema and praised Santosh Sivan for elevating the art of cinematography. Emmanuel Sproul, head of the Aunzieu company, lauded Sivan as one of the world’s greatest cinematographers, emphasizing his exceptional body of work. French actress Melanie Laurent and Chinese-French actress Jing Wang also recognized Sivan’s contributions. India’s Ambassador to France, Javed Ashraf, discussed Sivan’s impactful work in Hindi cinema, recalling the audience’s admiration for his cinematography in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Dil Se’ during its screening in Berlin.

A Celebration of Talent

Indian actress Preity Zinta shared her experiences working with Sivan, expressing the joy and trust actors feel under his direction. The event featured video messages from prominent Indian cinema figures such as Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Mohanlal, Gurinder Chaddha, Nandita Das, Shekhar Kapoor, Mira Nair, Vidya Balan, Anil Mehta, and Mani Ratnam, all sharing their experiences of working with Sivan.

Santosh Sivan, who has worked on about 57 films and directed more than 17, recently completed the shooting of Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Santoshi’s film ‘Lahore 1947’ and Ritesh Deshmukh’s film ‘Raja Shivaji.’ Currently, he is busy with his film ‘Juni,’ which is based on the life and poetry of Kashmir’s classical poetess Habba Khatoon. The trailer of ‘Juni’ was released during his master class.

A Humble Acknowledgment

Expressing his gratitude, Sivan emphasized the universal nature of cinematography, transcending language and national barriers. He shared a touching anecdote about his time in Japan, where locals sang ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ from his film ‘Dil Se.’ He also reflected on his sacrifices and the support of his family, recalling the cultural richness he learned from his parents and grandmother in Kerala.

Sivan praised the Cannes Film Festival for its passion, commitment, and respect for both artists and technicians, noting that technicians are crucial to filmmaking. Reflecting on his career, he expressed his love for traveling and shooting, stating that one lifetime isn’t enough to capture all of India’s beauty. Despite his eligibility to settle in Hollywood after receiving membership in the American Cinematographic Society, Sivan chose to remain in India, where he finds endless inspiration for his cinematic endeavors. Nonetheless, he remains open to global opportunities, always returning to his homeland.
