Bollywood: Christmas vibes are in the air and to get into the groove and excitement to ‘Jingle Bell’ to the tune of Santa Claus’s special visit this Christmas. Here are a selection of 5 films, some old and some new so that you can countdown till Christmas day with your entire family across age groups and celebrate the festival in a special way ‘Bollywood Ishtyle’.
The master Hrishikesh Mukherjee, has brought his brand of cinema to Hindi Cinema with so many different kinds of setups and families. In the film ‘Anari’ released as early as 1959, with Nutan and Raj Kapoor , there is a Christmas and New Year celebration sequence. It’s picturised on the song ‘Nineteen Fifty-Six’ and with Helen dancing on it. Vocals by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar. Raj Kapoor isn’t quite comfortable with all the festivities which are quite unfamiliar to him.
This 1974 film stars Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore and Vinod Mehra. It has a proper Christmas song sequence and even a Bollywood version of ‘Jingle Bells’. That is titled as ‘Aata Hai, Aata Hai’.
Sanjeev Kumar is dressed as Santa Claus to entertain some kids. The set feels like in a Christmas fantasy land. Vocals are the versatile Kishore Kumar, lyrics by Rajinder Krishan and music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
This quirky 2010 fun rom-com film is all about the quintessential Christmas time in the city of Las Vegas. Directed by Shakun Batra the film stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Imran Khan. The lead pair encounter each other in strange circumstances on Christmas Eve. The film’s poster also has the duo wearing Christmas theme caps and the colour scheme also spells Christmas in bright beautiful red. The film’s takes us through the streets of Las Vegas showcasing beautiful Christmas sightings.
Another 2010 release, the film stars Imran Khan and Priyanka Chopra in the lead. It film traces the Christmas to New Year’s Eve time in Las Vegas and New York through its two main leads. Christmas fervour can be felt in the film as the couple countdown their days till New Year’s eve. The film’s entire topography, decor, locations, festivities are all around the festive season. Christmas and New Year time can be felt in every beat of this film. Priyanka can be seen celebrating Christmas with her parents and Imran is seen celebrating with his colleague’s family. We get enough Christmasy vibes from the general feel of the film.

The Rohit Shetty directed 2015 film which reunited the hit ‘jodi’ of Kajol and Shahrukh Khan after almost 15 years also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. While the film didn’t have much luck at the box office, the sweet Christmas sequence is definitely worth a watch. Varun’s character Veer expresses his live to Ishita, played by Kriti Sanon on Christmas outside a Church. Its a cute and romantic scene reminiscent of some Hollywood films and also the iconic Shahrukh Khan open arms style pose that Varun emulates while proposing. The song that plays during this sequence ‘Premika’ is set in the Christmas backdrop. Thus giving the very romantic Christmas vibes.
