National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah announced on Tuesday that his son, Omar Abdullah, will become the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. “Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister,” Farooq told reporters after the Congress-NC alliance secured a majority in the first J&K Assembly elections in 10 years. He emphasized that the people have rejected the decisions made on August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was revoked.
Omar Abdullah won both Budgam and Ganderbal Assembly seats with large margins, defeating his rivals from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In Budgam, he defeated Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by 18,485 votes, securing 36,010 votes. In Ganderbal, he won against Bashir Ahmad Mir with a margin of 10,574 votes. This victory strengthens his political standing after losing the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baramulla.
Farooq Abdullah expressed hope for positive changes under Omar’s leadership. He promised a governance style that would prioritize public interest over police authority, and work towards releasing innocent prisoners. Farooq added that freedom for the media and fostering trust between communities would be key goals. Omar Abdullah echoed this optimism on social media, expressing hope for a better outcome this time.
