Over 40% of voters in Haryana cast their ballots by 1 P.M. on Saturday, as the 90-seat legislative Assembly went to polls. The Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 9.53% within the first two hours of polling. Minor skirmishes were reported in Narnaund, but the election process continued smoothly.
Among the early voters were outgoing Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, and opposition leaders Bhupinder Hooda, Kumari Selja, and Randeep Singh Surjewala.
The overall poll percentage was 40.1% by 1 P.M., according to Election Commission data. Ambala saw a turnout of 42.2%, Bhiwani 40.2%, Charkhi Dadri 40.8%, Gurugram 33.2%, Jind 43.5%, Kurukshetra 43.9%, Mewat 45.1%, Panipat 42.4%, and Palwal 41.3%, among others.
Sunil Kumar, a groom from Pipli village in Kurukshetra, cast his vote before heading to his wedding. “You should never waste your vote,” he said. BJP MP Naveen Jindal also drew attention by arriving at a Kurukshetra polling booth on horseback.
Chief Minister Saini expressed confidence in a third BJP term, claiming voters had rejected Congress’s “politics of lies.” In contrast, opposition leader Bhupinder Hooda predicted that resentment among key voter groups would lead to the BJP’s defeat. Hooda urged voters to cast ballots for progress and prosperity, sharing his message on X.
Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal called for active voter participation, emphasizing that every vote counts in this “festival of democracy.”
A total of 2.03 crore voters, including 1.07 crore men, 95.7 lakh women, and 467 third-gender voters, are eligible to decide the fate of 1,031 candidates.
