Zomato Abandons Green Attire for ‘Pure Veg’ Fleet Amid Controversy: Emphasizes Rider Safety

Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has responded to social media backlash regarding the food delivery company’s new ‘pure veg fleet.’ In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), he clarified, “While we will continue to maintain a separate fleet for vegetarian orders, we have decided to discontinue the practice of visually distinguishing this fleet on the ground by using the color green. All our delivery riders – both our regular fleet and our fleet for vegetarian orders – will now wear the color red.”
This decision follows Zomato’s earlier announcement of a dedicated fleet exclusively serving orders from ‘pure veg’ restaurants, with deliveries packaged in distinctive green boxes.

What will change now after the Zomato CEO’s announcement?

Deepinder Goyal clarified, stating, “This implies that the fleet designated for vegetarian orders will no longer be visually identifiable on the ground. However, it will still be indicated on the app that the vegetarian-only fleet will handle vegetarian orders.”

Why was the decision taken as per Deepinder Goyal?

Citing the safety of delivery partners as a primary concern, Goyal mentioned that the modification “will guarantee that our delivery partners wearing red uniforms are not mistakenly associated with non-vegetarian food. This will prevent any potential issues with access to residential areas by RWAs or societies, especially during special occasions. Ensuring the physical safety of our riders is our top priority.”

What did Deepinder Goyal say on social media backlash?

Admitting the error, the Zomato CEO remarked, “We now understand that our actions could potentially lead to trouble for some of our customers with their landlords, which is something we wouldn’t want to be responsible for.”

Additionally, he expressed gratitude towards social media users for their feedback on the company’s decision, stating, “We appreciate all the feedback, both positive and negative, as it has been instrumental in guiding us to this optimal outcome. We remain committed to listening without ego or pride and eagerly anticipate continuing to serve you.”
