Stock Markets To Remain Open On Sunday, February 1, For Union Budget 2026

Indian stock exchanges will remain open on Sunday, February 1, 2026, to facilitate live trading during the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27.

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) confirmed the special trading session, breaking the usual weekend closure.

The NSE announced that it will conduct a full trading session on Budget Day. The pre-open session will run from 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM.

Regular trading will begin at 9:15 AM and continue until 3:30 PM. The exchange urged members to take note of the standard market timings.

Markets will remain active across segments. Equity trading, futures, options, and commodity derivatives will all resume operations on February 1.

This move aims to ensure uninterrupted market participation as the government unveils its fiscal roadmap.

The BSE issued a separate clarification. It stated that trading under the T+0 Settlement Session and auction sessions for settlement defaults will not take place on Sunday. All other permitted segments will function as scheduled.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget at 11:00 a.m. in the Lok Sabha.

This marks the first time since 2000 that Parliament will witness a Union Budget presentation on a Sunday.

In recent years, the government has shown flexibility in scheduling, with the 2025 Budget presented on a Saturday.

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also delivered the 2015 Budget on a weekend.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed the February 1 presentation date. He informed the media that the Finance Minister will begin the Budget speech at 11 AM in the Lower House.

The Budget Session of Parliament will start on January 28 and continue until April 2.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the first phase will conclude on February 13. The second phase will begin on March 9 and run through April 2.

President Droupadi Murmu approved the summoning of both Houses on the Centre’s recommendation.

Parliament will not meet on January 29 due to the Beating Retreat ceremony.

Both Houses will reconvene on January 30, when the government is expected to table the Economic Survey.

The decision to open markets on Sunday underscores the Budget’s significance for investors and the broader economy.
