Indian equity markets, Sensex and Nifty, opened on a positive note on Friday, continuing gains for the second consecutive trading session as global cues turned favourable.
The Sensex rose by 132 points, or 0.16 per cent, to 82,440, while the Nifty 50 added 52 points, or 0.21 per cent, to reach 25,342.
Broad-cap indices mirrored benchmark trends, with the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 0.32 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 advancing 0.24 per cent.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal outperformed, climbing over 0.9 per cent, while Nifty Media, PSU banks, realty, and oil & gas lagged. Analysts placed immediate support for Nifty at the 25,100–25,150 zone, with key support seen at 25,400–25,450.
Asian markets opened higher, buoyed by Wall Street gains and moderated geopolitical concerns. China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen indices rose 0.27 per cent and 0.24 per cent respectively, while Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.5 per cent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 0.29 per cent, and South Korea’s Kospi climbed 0.92 per cent.
In the US, equity indices closed in the green overnight, with Nasdaq up 0.91 per cent, the S&P 500 gaining 0.55 per cent, and the Dow Jones rising 0.63 per cent.
The trend of sustained foreign institutional investor (FII) selling and domestic institutional investor (DII) buying that characterised 2025 has continued into 2026.
Analysts note that FII activity largely depends on growth in India’s corporate earnings, as investors weigh opportunities in other markets with more attractive valuations.
On January 22, FIIs sold net equities worth Rs 2,550 crore, while DIIs purchased equities worth Rs 4,223 crore, reflecting continued domestic confidence in the market.
With corporate earnings growth expected to take time, analysts caution that FII selling may persist, potentially limiting a sustained market rally despite positive news triggers.
