Sensex, Nifty end sharply lower as escalating West Asia tensions rattle investor confidence and trigger a broad-based market selloff.
The Sensex declined 1,312.91 points, or 1.70 per cent, to settle at 76,015.28. The Nifty also slipped 360.3 points, or 1.49 per cent, ending the session at 23,815.85.
Analysts stated that persistent geopolitical uncertainty and rising crude oil prices weighed heavily on market sentiment throughout the trading session.
Investors aggressively reduced risk exposure amid fears of prolonged regional instability.
According to market experts, the Nifty currently appears fragile in the near term.
Analysts identified immediate support near 23,700, warning that further weakness could accelerate losses. Resistance remains positioned around the 24,000 mark.
Among major losers on the Nifty were Titan Company, InterGlobe Aviation and State Bank of India. Coal India, Adani Ports and Hindustan Unilever emerged among the few gainers.
Broader markets also witnessed sustained selling pressure. The Nifty MidCap index declined 1.05 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index fell 1.13 per cent.
Sectorally, consumer durable stocks suffered the steepest losses, with the Nifty Consumer Durables index plunging nearly four per cent. Realty, PSU banking and media shares also remained under severe pressure.
Defensive sectors displayed resilience. FMCG, pharma and healthcare counters attracted selective buying as investors shifted towards comparatively safer assets during heightened volatility.
Analysts warned that rising crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty may continue influencing market behaviour in the coming sessions.
The Indian rupee also weakened sharply and settled at a record low level amid mounting global concerns.
