Sensex, Nifty End Higher As India–EU FTA Boosts Investor Sentiment

Indian equity benchmark indices ended Wednesday’s volatile trading session on a positive note, buoyed by optimism surrounding the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and ongoing December-quarter earnings announcements.

The BSE Sensex closed at 82,345, registering a gain of 487 points, or 0.60 per cent.

The index witnessed sharp fluctuations during the day, touching an intra-day high of 82,504 and a low of 81,815 as markets swung between gains and losses.

The NSE Nifty also ended higher, settling at 25,343, up 167 points, or 0.66 per cent. During the session, the index moved between a high of 25,372 and a low of 25,188 before recovering towards the close.

Market participants remained cautiously optimistic.

Analysts noted that while the Nifty continues to trade below its short-term moving averages, indicating near-term caution, immediate resistance lies in the 25,400–25,450 range, followed by a stronger supply zone around 25,600–25,650.

On the stock-specific front, shares of Bharat Electronics Limited surged nearly 9 per cent, emerging as the top gainer on both benchmark indices.

Other stocks that supported the rally included ONGC, Coal India, Hindalco, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid, Adani Enterprises, Trent, Mahindra & Mahindra, Cipla and Shriram Finance.

However, losses in select heavyweight stocks capped sharper gains.

Tata Consumer Products declined 4.5 per cent, while Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Max Healthcare, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Infosys and Eicher Motors ended lower.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 1.66 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 2.26 per cent.

Sectorally, PSU, Oil and Gas, Metal and PSU Bank indices led the rally, reflecting a shift towards cyclical stocks.
