Rising Middle East Tensions Weigh On Indian Stock Markets This Week

Indian stock markets are expected to remain unsettled in the coming days as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East influence global investor sentiment.

Market analysts suggest that uncertainty surrounding energy supply and inflation risks could trigger significant fluctuations in domestic equities.

Concerns intensified after Kuwait announced a reduction in oil production and refining operations.

The decision followed growing security risks in the Persian Gulf, where tanker movement has reportedly become difficult due to threats linked to Iran.

Kuwaiti authorities described the move as a precaution but did not disclose the scale of the output cut.

The situation has raised fears of a surge in commodity prices, particularly crude oil, which could add to inflationary pressures worldwide.

Analysts say such developments complicate the task for central banks that are already trying to balance growth with price stability.

During the previous week, Indian equities faced heavy volatility and persistent selling.

The Nifty 50 ended the week at 24,450, while the Sensex closed at 78,919, each falling about 2.9 per cent.

The Bank Nifty performed even weaker, dropping 4.5 per cent to settle near 57,783, signalling sharper pressure on banking stocks.

Technical Outlook

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, stated, “Technically, the index remains below the previous swing low, indicating continued bearishness. In the short term, the index may continue to decline, with the potential to move towards 24,000 or lower.”

“On the higher side, resistance is placed at 25,000; until this level is crossed decisively, the trend is likely to favour a sell-on-rise strategy,” De further added.

Meanwhile, analysts believe certain sectors could still attract selective buying.

Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President for Research at Religare Broking, pointed to pharmaceuticals, defence, public sector enterprises, and some metal and energy companies as potential areas of interest for investors.

However, sectors such as banking, real estate, information technology, and selected FMCG stocks may remain under pressure in the near term.

Market participants will also keep a close watch on global developments and crude oil price movements.

Domestic inflation data, particularly the Consumer Price Index figures scheduled for release on 12 March, will be another key factor shaping investor expectations.

In addition, investors are likely to monitor India’s foreign exchange reserves data to assess the country’s ability to withstand external economic shocks.

Energy market concerns have been amplified by comments from Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi last week. He warned that if conflict in the Middle East persists even for a few days, Gulf exporters could declare force majeure and suspend energy deliveries.

Such a scenario, he said, could potentially push oil prices towards $150 per barrel and natural gas prices to around $40 per MMBtu within weeks.
