Reliance, Rolls-Royce Join Hands To Explore Indigenous Engine For India’s AMCA

Reliance Industries on Friday announced its intention to partner with Rolls-Royce on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of an indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

The announcement came through a stock exchange filing and a press release.

The proposed collaboration between India’s largest private-sector company and the British aircraft-engine manufacturer will explore the creation of a dedicated aerospace gas turbine complex in India.

The proposed facility would serve as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technologies. It would, however, cover the design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and lifecycle support of combat engines.

Under the proposed partnership, Rolls-Royce’s technology and expertise would be combined with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing and execution capabilities to develop the AMCA engine in India.

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for an indigenous engine to power India’s fighter aircraft programme as part of the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat drive.

Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani said the partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise with Reliance’s capabilities in technology, manufacturing, scale and execution to build an aero-engine ecosystem in India.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic said the proposed alliance brings together the company’s century-old engineering and engine expertise with Reliance’s position in Indian industry and could mark a step towards building a strong, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem.

Wider Defence Cooperation

The companies said the proposed venture could eventually expand beyond the AMCA engine to wider cooperation in defence, civil aerospace and emerging power and propulsion systems.

AMCA is India’s indigenous fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme, while developing a domestically produced engine has remained a long-term defence objective.

India currently depends on foreign suppliers for fighter engines.

The announcement of strategic intent, however, does not constitute a signed joint venture or contract.

The companies have described it as an initial step towards exploring the proposed gas turbine complex.
