Navi Mumbai International Airport: India’s New State-Of-The-Art Aviation Hub

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL), is a greenfield airport project in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, approximately 37 km from South Mumbai.

NMIAL is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between Mumbai International Airport Ltd (a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd) holding 74 per cent, and CIDCO holding 26 per cent.

The planners designed the airport to handle the growing air traffic in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and western India while strengthening India’s global connectivity.

Runways and Terminals

NMIA features two parallel ‘Code F’ runways, each 3,700 metres long and 60 metres wide. The airport is being developed in multiple phases:

  • Phase I Terminal: 234,000 sqm, capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), serving both domestic and international flights.
  • Phase II & III Terminals: Phase II and III expansions will increase cumulative capacity to 50 MPPA, with final Phase IV terminals planned to handle 90 MPPA.

The design team drew inspiration from India’s national flower, the lotus, and created sculptural pillars with expansive roof canopies.

Passenger Facilities and Services

Terminal 1 is equipped with 66 check-in counters, 22 self-baggage drops, 29 aerobridges, and 10 bus boarding gates. Key passenger amenities include:

  • Kids’ play zones and CIP lounges for 500 passengers.
  • 80-room transit hotel for short stays.
  • Immersive digital art programmes showcasing Maharashtra’s culture.
  • Retail and F&B facilities with 110 outlets, including duty-free, casual dining, and Indian street food concepts.

Cargo and Technology

NMIA’s cargo terminal has a capacity of 0.5 million metric tonnes per annum in the initial phase, featuring:

  • Fully automated shipment tracking, semi-automated material handling, and cashless operations.
  • Specialised zones for pharmaceuticals, perishables, dangerous goods, express cargo, valuables, and live animals.

Technology integration includes 5G connectivity, IoT-based real-time monitoring, automated baggage handling, Digi Yatra contactless processing, and smart traffic management.

Sustainability Initiatives

NMIA is designed as a green airport with:

  • 47MW solar power generation.
  • Rainwater harvesting and wastewater reuse.
  • Low-flow water fixtures and EVs for airside operations.
  • Passive cooling systems and Automated People Movers to reduce emissions.

Connectivity

The airport is strategically located near major industrial and port areas:

  • 14 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
  • 22 km from the MIDC Taloja industrial area.
  • 35 km from Mumbai Port Trust via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
  • 32 km from Thane and 40 km from Bhiwandi.

NMIA combines modern infrastructure, digital innovation, and sustainable practices to serve as a major aviation and logistics hub for India.
