Elon Musk on Wednesday took aim at Wikipedia, declaring that his latest venture, Grokipedia, will far surpass the long-established online encyclopedia ‘by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth and accuracy’.
The billionaire entrepreneur made the comment while replying to a user on his social media platform X.
xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence firm and the creator of the chatbot Grok, developed the new platform and promotes it as an AI-driven knowledge hub designed to counter what Musk calls a ‘woke’ and biased Wikipedia.
Calling Grokipedia a ‘major leap beyond Wikipedia’, Musk said the project aligns with xAI’s wider mission of helping humanity gain a clearer understanding of the universe.
The idea took shape last month after Musk’s friend David Sacks, who also advises US President Donald Trump on AI and cryptocurrency, encouraged him to create a Wikipedia alternative.
Musk endorsed the suggestion, arguing that an AI-built encyclopedia could prove ‘hugely important for civilisation’ by reducing human bias and political influence in how information is presented.
When users look up topics on Grokipedia, they find AI-reviewed entries ‘fact-checked by Grok’, xAI’s conversational model, with timestamps showing the latest updates.
Unlike Wikipedia, the platform does not permit direct editing of articles. Instead, readers may submit feedback or suggest amendments via an online form.
Interestingly, Grokipedia currently includes notices stating that some of its content comes from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 Licence.
This implies that the platform still partly depends on Wikipedia’s database. Musk, however, has said that this reliance will end before the year’s close.
Grokipedia currently hosts 885,279 entries and continues to add new material rapidly.
Musk has also confirmed that the platform’s core AI model is open source, making it freely available for public use and examination.
Users can currently access Grokipedia only through a web browser, as the platform has not yet announced Android or iOS apps.
