Mukesh Ambani Highlights Reliance’s Purpose-Driven Growth & Future Tech Vision

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, reaffirmed the group’s mission to create impact at scale and improve the lives of all Indians.

In an interview with McKinsey & Company, Ambani credited the company’s purpose-led growth to a philosophy laid down by his father, Dhirubhai Ambani.

“My father used to say, if you start a business to become a billionaire, you’re an idiot. But if you aim to impact a billion people, you might succeed and also earn money as a by-product,” Ambani recalled.

Ambani emphasised that Reliance’s North Star is rooted in delivering societal value through cutting-edge technologies.

“We believe technology changes lives, and future businesses must master future technologies. Our core belief is to harness innovation for national development,” he said.

Building the future: From Jio to green energy

Ambani described Jio as the company’s most significant risk, taken with a firm belief in India’s potential despite doubts from industry analysts.

“Some said India wasn’t ready for such advanced digital technology. Still, we knew that even if it didn’t deliver returns, it would be our greatest philanthropic act by digitising India.”

He revealed that the initial investments in Jio came from Reliance’s own funds, reflecting the company’s deep commitment to national development.

“Even if it had failed financially, digitising India would have been a transformational contribution,” he noted.

Ambani stated that Reliance is transitioning into a deep-tech and advanced manufacturing firm.

He highlighted the company’s work in building 5G infrastructure completely in-house and its ambitious entry into green and clean energy domains, including solar, hydrogen, batteries, and bioenergy.

“We built everything for our 5G network—the core, the software, the hardware. We partnered with global giants for 20% to benchmark our 80%,” he explained.

Discussing Reliance’s approach to artificial intelligence, Ambani said the focus lies in solving practical challenges.

“Our purpose in AI is to address complex societal problems and create wealth for the nation. We have no interest in the high-risk GPU race. Instead, we focus on downstream AI solutions that attract the best minds,” he said.

Throughout the interview, Ambani reiterated that Reliance’s ethos, inspired by his father, remains rooted in service, scale, and societal good.

The group continues to shape India’s future through its investments in innovation, infrastructure, and inclusive growth.
