Markets Open Higher: Sensex Soars, Nifty Nears 22,900

Indian equity benchmarks opened on a strong note on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty surging amid hopes of easing tensions in West Asia following remarks by US President Donald Trump on postponing potential strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

The Sensex jumped nearly 2 per cent, gaining 1,516 points to touch an intra-day high of 74,212, while the Nifty opened at 22,878, up 365.80 points or 1.62 per cent.

Investors bought across sectors, driving consumer durables, metals, auto, and PSU bank stocks up by as much as 2 per cent.

Financial and mid- and small-cap indices also advanced over 2 per cent, while IT, FMCG, energy, and healthcare stocks posted gains of up to 1 per cent.

Investor sentiment improved after Trump said the United States and Iran had held ‘very good and productive conversations’ over the past two days, adding that Washington would delay any military strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure for five days, subject to ongoing discussions.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, denied that any talks had taken place, contradicting Trump’s statement.

In a post on X, he said, “No negotiations have been held with the US, and fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped.”

Analysts said the rebound reflects easing tensions, but its sustainability depends on global cues and oil trends.

Markets are seeing a relief rally after recent losses, though high crude prices and uncertainty may cap gains.

Oil stayed elevated, with Brent near $104 and WTI up over 4%. Asian markets rose, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed over 1% higher.
