India’s leading carrier, IndiGo, could face pressure on its near-term earnings as aviation fuel prices increase amid escalating geopolitical tensions, according to Moody’s Ratings. The rise in input costs is expected to affect operating margins.
The report noted that IndiGo’s booking cycle of around 30–45 days provides some scope to adjust fares in response to rising costs. The absence of fuel hedging makes the airline more susceptible to sudden fluctuations in prices.
Recent military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iran have disrupted regional air travel. These developments have led to longer flight routes and increased operational expenses.
Benchmark crude such as Brent crude has climbed to nearly $100 per barrel, marking a sharp rise compared to previous averages.
Jet fuel prices have also increased significantly, adding to the cost burden on airlines worldwide.
Despite global pressures, IndiGo’s dominant position in India’s domestic market provides a degree of stability.
The airline holds approximately 64 per cent market share and earns a substantial portion of its revenue from domestic routes.
The carrier has attempted to sustain some European services by adopting alternative flight paths, though operational challenges have limited the effectiveness of these efforts.
Over the medium term, IndiGo retains the ability to shift aircraft deployment towards domestic routes or expand into Southeast Asian markets if disruptions continue.
Moody’s warned that continued high fuel costs, extended flight durations, and currency fluctuations linked to a weaker rupee could keep financial performance under strain.
Company estimates suggest that every $1 rise in jet fuel prices increases monthly expenses by ₹20–25 crore.
Shares of InterGlobe Aviation edged higher on the BSE, indicating measured investor confidence despite ongoing challenges.
