India’s smartphone export momentum hit a record high in the April–June quarter (Q1FY26), with shipments reaching $7.72 billion. This marked a 58 per cent jump from $4.9 billion in the same period last year, according to reports.
Apple Inc exported iPhones worth $6 billion during the quarter through its contract manufacturers. This represented an 82 per cent increase from the previous year.
The quarter saw the highest smartphone export total from India so far. Apple alone contributed nearly 78 per cent of the total exports.
The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, launched in 2020, played a major role in this surge. It boosted local manufacturing capacity significantly, the reports said.
In FY21, India exported smartphones worth $3.1 billion. By FY25, the figure had climbed to $24.1 billion, with Apple accounting for $17.5 billion. The shift from basic assembly to advanced manufacturing was evident.
India’s total electronics exports in Q1FY26 reached $12.4 billion, up 48 per cent year-on-year. Smartphones made up 62 per cent of this, up from 58 per cent in the same quarter last year.
Padget Electronics, a Dixon Technologies arm, exported $175 million worth of smartphones. Samsung also contributed, accounting for 12 per cent of total smartphone exports.
A US investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act may lead to import duties on national security grounds. The probe is expected to conclude by August 14. Any such action could disrupt global supply chains.
Reports noted that smartphones, ranked 167th among India’s export items in FY15, have become the top export item by HS code in FY25. This highlights India’s rising strength as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
