India’s renewable energy installed capacity reached 209.44 GW by December 2024, marking a 15.84% increase from 180.80 GW a year earlier, according to a statement from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This record expansion underscores the country’s commitment to clean energy growth.
The total capacity added in 2024 more than doubled, rising to 28.64 GW from 13.05 GW added in 2023. This substantial increase highlights the nation’s accelerated pace in boosting its renewable energy infrastructure.
Solar power led the charge in driving this growth, contributing 24.54 GW of the total added capacity. This resulted in a 33.47% year-on-year increase in solar’s cumulative installed capacity, bringing the total to 97.86 GW in 2024.
Wind power also saw significant growth, with an addition of 3.42 GW, bringing the total wind capacity to 48.16 GW—an increase of 7.64% from 2023.
Bioenergy installed capacity rose slightly from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW by the end of 2024, further contributing to India’s renewable energy goals.
Small hydro power projects saw a modest increase, with the installed capacity rising from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.
Under the leadership of Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, MNRE has implemented key initiatives to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. This milestone is a crucial step towards enhancing India’s sustainable energy capacity.
