India’s mobile phone manufacturing sector has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Driven by strategic government initiatives like the Product-Linked Incentive (PLI) and Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP), the industry’s value has soared to an impressive Rs 4.1 lakh crore.
This surge has catapulted India to the position of the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. Global tech giants such as Samsung, Apple, and Google have established manufacturing facilities in the country, producing their latest generation smartphones for both domestic and international markets.
A recent report by the Broadband India Forum (BIF) highlights the key factors driving this growth. The report analyzed the impact of tariffs, customs rates, India’s global value chains (GVC) insertion, ease of doing business challenges, and opportunities for women in the workforce.

According to the report, the government’s “Make in India” initiative has played a pivotal role in attracting foreign investments and encouraging domestic manufacturers to set up production facilities within India. This has not only reduced the country’s dependence on imports but also created thousands of jobs in the manufacturing sector.
The government’s focus on enabling PLI beneficiaries to maximize their benefits and meet production targets has further contributed to the industry’s growth. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently emphasized the significant increase in domestic production and exports of mobile phones over the past six years, highlighting the maturity of the industry in India.
As India continues to strengthen its position as a global manufacturing hub, the mobile phone industry is poised to play a crucial role in driving economic growth and creating new opportunities for the country’s workforce.
