Indian Stock Markets Shut As Maharashtra Civic Polls Trigger Trading Holiday

Indian stock markets remained closed on Thursday following municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and 28 other civic bodies are going to polls, prompting the state government to declare a public holiday.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) confirmed that there will be no trading in the equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, or electronic gold receipts on the day.

The exchange also noted that equity derivative contracts originally set to expire on 15 January 2026 expired a day earlier.

These changes will be reflected in the end-of-day contract master files.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) announced a trading holiday across both the capital market and futures and options segments.

Trading on both exchanges will resume on Friday.

On Wednesday, the domestic stock markets ended lower after a volatile session. Losses in IT and real estate stocks weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

Additionally, rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the US-India trade deal capped any recovery during the day.

The Sensex fell 0.29 per cent, or 244.98 points, to close at 83,382.71, while the Nifty dropped 0.26 per cent, or 66.70 points, to settle at 25,665.60.

Broader markets fared slightly better, with the Nifty SmallCap 100 index rising 0.67 per cent and the Nifty MidCap 100 index gaining 0.29 per cent.

Sectoral Performance and Market Outlook

Sectoral trends showed pressure on IT and real estate stocks, as the Nifty IT index declined 1.08 per cent and the Nifty Realty index fell 0.92 per cent.

Market analysts highlighted that persistent foreign institutional selling, along with geopolitical and trade-related uncertainties, kept risk appetite subdued.

Although early optimism emerged due to support levels and progress in trade discussions, the lack of sustained follow-through created a cautious, stock-specific trading environment.

Investors will return on Friday with renewed focus, and analysts will monitor sectoral trends and global developments that may affect market momentum.
