Indian Stock Markets Closed On Dr BR Ambedkar Jayanti; Trading To Resume Wednesday

Trading activity across Indian stock exchanges remained suspended on Tuesday due to the observance of Dr BR Ambedkar Jayanti, marking the second market holiday in April for the current financial year.

Both the National Stock Exchange of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange halted operations across equity, derivatives and currency segments for the day.

In the commodities market, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India did not conduct its morning session but is scheduled to reopen for trading later in the evening. The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange remained closed for the entire day.

Market operations will likely resume on Wednesday.

In the previous session, benchmark indices ended lower. The BSE Sensex declined 0.91 per cent to close at 76,847, while the Nifty 50 slipped 0.86 per cent to settle at 23,842.

According to the trading calendar for 2026, the next market holiday will fall on Maharashtra Day (May 1), followed by a closure for Eid al-Adha later in the month.

Earlier, exchanges had remained shut for festivals such as Holi, Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti.

Separately, the government declared a public holiday for central offices to mark the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar.

Global markets, however, showed positive momentum. Asian indices, including the Nikkei 225, Hang Seng Index and KOSPI, recorded gains, while US markets such as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite also closed higher.

In commodities, Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate were trading lower during the day.
