Indian Markets Post Weekly Gains Ahead Of Budget 2026 Amid Mixed Global Cues

Indian stock markets gained around 1 per cent over the week, despite volatile trading sessions influenced by mixed global cues and rising geopolitical tensions.

Investors remained cautious ahead of the Union Budget 2026-27, with risk appetite softening towards the end of the week.

The Nifty 50 index rose 1.09 per cent over the week but fell 0.39 per cent on the last trading day, closing at 25,320. The BSE Sensex added 0.90 per cent during the week but slipped 296 points, or 0.36 per cent, to end at 81,537.

Sectoral performance was mixed. Diversified consumer services and hardware technology stocks posted the steepest losses, falling 2.5–3.7 per cent, while FMCG, media, and software shares declined over 1 per cent.

Metal and oil & gas stocks led the weekly gains, up over 2 per cent, though the Nifty Metal index dropped more than 5 per cent on Friday. Broader indices performed strongly, with Nifty Midcap100 rising 2.25 per cent and Nifty Smallcap100 gaining 3.2 per cent.

Tariff concerns and mixed corporate earnings dampened market sentiment at the start of the week, but optimism over the India–EU trade agreement partially offset the losses.

Mid-week, sentiment improved following a positive economic survey, reinforcing expectations of robust FY27 growth and a benign inflation outlook.

Analysts noted that FII outflows, rupee depreciation, and concerns over the incoming US Federal Reserve chair contributed to late-week volatility.

Looking forward, analysts expect markets to remain event-driven, with the Union Budget acting as the key domestic trigger.

Cyclical sectors may show resilience if supported by policy measures, while IT and export-oriented stocks are likely to stay sensitive to global macroeconomic developments.
