India Poised To Lead Global Green Hydrogen Revolution

India is positioning itself as a frontrunner in the global hydrogen industry, particularly in green hydrogen, according to Dave Ernsberger, Co-President of S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Speaking on Thursday, he hailed India’s progress in developing hydrogen capabilities and highlighted its special emphasis on green hydrogen as ‘truly impressive’.

Ernsberger described the National Green Hydrogen Mission as a crucial pillar of the worldwide shift towards clean energy. He also said it is essential for achieving energy independence.

The Union Cabinet approved the Mission in January 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore. It aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage and export. It aims to produce five million metric tonnes per year by 2030.

He underlined that India’s abundant renewable resources and strong industrial base provide an ideal platform for leadership in this sector.

Collaboration Seen as Key Driver

Ernsberger emphasised that the success of this emerging industry depends on partnerships.

“Collaboration between the private sector, the public sector, government leadership, traders and supply chains will propel this new industry forward,” he said, noting that coordinated efforts will be vital for scaling up technology and infrastructure.

India’s green hydrogen ambitions extend to nurturing innovation. On September 11, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the first Annual Green Hydrogen R&D Conference. The event was held in New Delhi.

He also launched a ₹100 crore Call for Proposals to support start-ups. The scheme offers up to ₹5 crore per project for pilot initiatives in hydrogen production, storage, transport and utilisation.

At the conference, 25 start-ups showcased innovations ranging from electrolyser manufacturing to AI-driven optimisation and biological hydrogen solutions. These initiatives underscore India’s efforts to establish a robust ecosystem for green hydrogen and enhance its position as a future exporter.
