In a significant move to boost India’s naval defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a Rs 2,960 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) to the Indian Navy. This agreement, finalized on January 16, 2025, in New Delhi, marks a pivotal milestone in the country’s drive toward military self-reliance and bolstering maritime security.
The MRSAM system will be integrated into numerous Indian naval vessels, enhancing the air defence capabilities of the Indian Navy. This advanced surface-to-air missile system is designed to protect ships from a wide array of aerial threats, including fighter jets, missiles, and drones. By equipping future platforms with MRSAM, India will position itself as one of the few nations with such advanced capabilities in maritime defence.

This contract is a step forward in India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative, focusing on indigenization. BDL manufactures the MRSAM system, largely producing it in India with collaboration from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The project will also create substantial employment, generating an estimated 3.5 lakh man-days of work through contributions from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
India’s naval forces achieved a significant milestone in 2023 with the successful test-firing of the MRSAM from the frontline warship INS Visakhapatnam. The missile not only showcased its air defence capabilities but also proved effective as an anti-ship weapon. In addition, a recent “cooperative engagement firing” test demonstrated its ability to work seamlessly in multi-platform operations, further enhancing the Navy’s anti-air warfare readiness.
Cooperative engagement allows multiple ships to operate in tandem, sharing radar data and real-time targeting information. This strategy improves the efficiency of missile defence, reduces the risk of enemy detection, and eliminates unnecessary missile launches against a single target.
With the successful implementation of cooperative engagement and the operational readiness of the MRSAM, the Indian Navy has joined an exclusive group of global forces that possess advanced anti-air warfare technologies. This capability provides India’s naval forces with a strategic advantage, allowing for greater flexibility and efficiency in defending against aerial threats.
The Indian Navy will deploy the MRSAM on several advanced warships, including the Kolkata-class destroyers, making it a key feature on future naval platforms. Its integration will significantly enhance India’s maritime security, especially in a region facing growing maritime threats.
The collaboration between DRDO, IAI, and BDL not only advances India’s technological capabilities but also strengthens international defence ties. The successful development and deployment of indigenous systems like MRSAM underscore India’s commitment to enhancing self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing while promoting global partnerships.
As the Indian Navy modernizes its fleet, the MRSAM system will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. This development aligns with the country’s broader strategy to solidify its position as a dominant regional power, ensuring its forces remain equipped with cutting-edge technology to address evolving security challenges.
