India Clocks $5.5 Billion Smartphone Exports In April-May, Driven By PLI Scheme

India has recorded a strong start to FY26, with mobile exports crossing $3.09 billion in May alone. Union Railways and Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this on Wednesday. The total mobile exports for April-May reached $5.5 billion.

The growth is largely due to the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. It has strengthened domestic manufacturing. Tech giants like Apple and Samsung have expanded their supply chains in India.

Vaishnaw said mobile exports in May rose over 74 per cent year-on-year. “FY26 off to a strong start: $3 billion smartphone exports in May alone (+74 per cent YoY); $5.5 billion exports in April-May; and $8.2 billion electronics exports in April-May (+47 per cent YoY),” he posted on X.

Electronics exports see rapid rise

The minister said electronics exports climbed from fifth to third position in just one fiscal year. India achieved a record Rs 3.27 lakh crore in electronics exports in FY25. Out of this, mobile exports contributed Rs 2 lakh crore.

He also noted that electronics has remained India’s fastest-growing export among the top 10 categories for three consecutive years.

‘Make in India’ boosts jobs and global presence

According to Vaishnaw, lakhs of new jobs have emerged in the electronics sector. Many of these roles are filled by women. The growth also includes skilling, increased domestic value addition (DVA), and more MSMEs entering global supply chains.

The electronics industry has grown five times in a decade. Its value now exceeds Rs 11 lakh crore. In the same period, electronics exports rose six times to cross Rs 3.25 lakh crore.

Vaishnaw said companies like Apple now see the clear value of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. India has become a major hub for Apple’s global supply chain.
