Gautam Adani Denies Any Deal Influenced US DOJ Decision

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani denied under oath that any promise or agreement influenced the US Department of Justice’s decision. He filed an affidavit before the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Gautam Adani said he was unaware of any arrangement linked to the proposed dismissal. He denied any exchange connected to the criminal case.

The affidavit responded to a July 8 order by US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis.

The judge directed Gautam Adani to clarify whether he knew of any promise, offer or benefit linked to the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the indictment.

The Adani Group Chairman said he knew of no promise, offer, agreement or benefit linked to the dismissal. He also rejected suggestions that any exchange of value had influenced the government’s decision.

The Department of Justice charged Gautam Adani and seven others in 2024. It alleged they paid about USD 250 million in bribes to Indian officials, secured power supply contracts, and misled investors while raising funds in US markets.

Gautam Adani has consistently denied the allegations.

The affidavit also addressed speculation surrounding Adani Group’s proposed USD 10 billion investment in the United States.

The Adani Group Chairman stated that the investment plan announced publicly on November 13, 2024, before the indictment became public. He added that although his legal counsel discussed the proposal with US authorities, the Justice Department later confirmed it would not consider the investment while deciding whether to dismiss the case.

The Justice Department has also denied any connection between the proposed investment and its decision. It argued that the prosecution faced significant legal and evidentiary challenges and has sought dismissal of the criminal proceedings with prejudice, which would permanently close the case.
