‘Gas Leak’ From Kochi IOC Plant To Be Investigated By Technical Committee

A district-level meeting held on Friday decided to form a technical committee to investigate the alleged gas leak from an LPG terminal run by the Indian Oil Corporation in Puthuvype.

On October 4, a few individuals living nearby were hospitalized due to physical discomfort following a suspected leak from the facility.

Mercaptan, which is mixed with LPG at the plant to detect leaks, was suspected to have leaked, according to the police.

The alleged incident occurred between 6 and 9 p.m., according to the police, who added that the leakage was quickly stopped.

An expert team would be created to study the issue, according to the meeting attended by MLA KN Unnnikrishnan and District Collector NSK Umesh.

In a statement, the district authorities stated, “The panel includes the district medical officer, an Indian Oil Corporation representative, the joint director of the factory and boilers department and the chemical inspector, the Pollution Control Board member, the district hazard analyst, three independent chemical engineers, and others have been included in the panel”.

The collector asked the panel to investigate the matter and report back within a month.

The local authorities will organize an awareness campaign and simulated exercises around the probable leak site.

Residents who attended the meeting stated there was no facility to deal with leakages.

The meeting also voted to improve medical facilities in the surrounding panchayats.
