On Monday, Elon Musk plans to launch an AI platform called “TruthGPT” as a contender to Microsoft and Google’s existing offerings.
In addition, Musk denounced OpenAI, a company supported by Microsoft and responsible for creating the popular chatbot ChatGPT, for training its AI to deceive. He claimed that OpenAI has now become a “closed source” and “for-profit” organization that is strongly linked to Microsoft. Musk also criticized Larry Page, one of the co-founders of Google, for not prioritizing AI safety.

During a media interviewl, which is set to air later on Monday, Musk announced his plans to launch an AI platform called “TruthGPT”. This platform aims to seek maximum truth and comprehend the essence of the universe, according to Musk. He also stated that this could be the most effective approach to ensuring safety, as an AI that values understanding the universe is unlikely to destroy humanity, as we are an intriguing aspect of it.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Musk has been recruiting AI experts from Google’s parent company Alphabet to create a startup that will compete with OpenAI. Reuters reached out to Musk, OpenAI, and Page for comment, but there has been no immediate response from any of them.
Furthermore, state records reveal that Elon Musk has registered a company named X.AI Corp in Nevada. In the corporation, he is listed as the sole director. Along with him, Jared Birchall who is the managing director of Musk’s family office, is also listed in the company as the secretary.
This development took place despite Musk and a team of AI professionals and industry executives calling for a six-month suspension in the development of systems more advanced than OpenAI’s newly released GPT-4, citing potential hazards to society.
During his interview with Carlson, Musk emphasized his concerns about AI and stated, according to excerpts, that “AI is more hazardous than, for example, poorly managed aircraft design or production maintenance or faulty car production.” He also mentioned that AI has the capability of causing the destruction of civilization.
He expressed that a highly intelligent AI could write remarkably well and have the potential to influence public opinion.
During the weekend, he shared on Twitter that he had a meeting with the former U.S. President Barack Obama during his presidency, where he urged the need for Washington to “promote AI regulation”.
In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI, but he resigned from the board of directors in 2018. In a tweet from 2019, he explained that he left OpenAI because he needed to concentrate on his other companies, Tesla and SpaceX. He also tweeted that additional reasons for his departure were that “Tesla was vying for some of the same personnel as OpenAI, and I did not concur with certain objectives of the OpenAI team.”
Musk, who serves as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has also taken on the role of CEO of Twitter, a social media platform he purchased for $44 billion in the previous year.
During the media interview, Musk revealed that he has recently assessed Twitter to be worth “less than half” of its acquisition cost. Moreover, Microsoft Corp disclosed a new multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI in January. This move was to increase competition with rival Google and boosting the competition for AI funding in Silicon Valley.
